Dan Goossen: I want to welcome everybody on. I know it’s early out here on the West Coast, where this fight is going to be emanating from. You know, HBO’s loss is ESPN’s gain, because 10, 15 years ago, this would have been right up HBO’s and Showtime’s ally to have two hungry heavyweights trying to re-establish themselves into the – the world championship picture and – and to also make history.
I believe this is a history-making fight. And we’ve got the head of ESPN on, and I’m going to ask him to do a little research, if he already hasn’t, which I’m sure he has, but I’m sure in a lot of ways this could be a history-making fight on its own, because I don’t believe there’s ever been two heavyweights at this level or any level, quite frankly, of Mexican descent that have fought one another.

K. Swanson:
Thanks everybody for calling in again. You can see that we are in full swing for the July 31 Marquez vs. Diaz II Fight of the Year: The Rematch, including these wonderful Undercard conference calls that we are participating in right now. We’re happy to have Daniel Jacobs and Dmitry Pirog on the call right now. The translator for Dmitry will be Vadim Kornilov. And without further adieu, I’m going to introduce Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions.
R. Schaefer:
Thank you, Kelly, and welcome everybody to today’s conference call. Only a couple weeks to go to the big showdown – Marquez vs. Diaz from the Mandalay Bay, we’ve had a series of conference calls, and today I’m really excited to have two great fighters on the call. One of the most-anticipated fights on that outstanding undercard is going to be the WBO Middleweight Championship of the World between Danny Jacobs and Dmitry Pirog. This is a tremendous opportunity for both fighters. I know they’re going to be very well prepared. I know that both of them are training extremely hard, and so I would like to thank both fighters and their teams for being on the call today.
Captain Huck warming up for Godfrey in German heat
WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck (29-1, 22 KOs) caught up with the German media yesterday as he continues his preparation for his clash with Matt Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs). The duo will battle it out in Erfurt on August 21, which will be Huck´s fourth title defense. “Despite the hot weather in Germany we have been working really hard in practice,” Huck said. “My trainer Ulli Wegner has scheduled a lot of exhausting sessions. Fighting in Erfurt will be special for him because he lived there for a long time. So I intend to put on a spectacular performance on August 21 to please him and of course my fans all over the world. Godfrey is a tough challenger, but he has never been inside the ring with someone like me. I am the best cruiserweight in the world and I am keen to prove it once again.”
Huck and Wegner have been working out at Team Sauerland´s headquarters in Berlin. The Max-Schmeling-Gym is located right next to the Olympic Stadium. At the end of the month, they will move camp to Kienbaum, 20 miles east of the capital. “My fighters know that I am a very demanding coach,” Wegner said. “Marco is doing very well in practice. He does what I ask of him. He is willing to learn and to improve. He is such an explosive and powerful fighter, but there are still some parts of the game where he can get better. We are working on that and are already looking forward to August 21.”
Trainers’ History Adds Spice to IBF Junior Middleweight Title Clash:
International Boxing Hall of Famer Emanuel Steward Will Train Cornelius Bundrage, Former World Champion James ‘Buddy’ McGirt Will Train Titleholder Cory Spinks
ST. LOUIS—An interesting fact emerged in June when Don King planned to present IBF 154-pound champion Cory Spinks against mandatory challenger Cornelius “K9” Bundrage in St. Louis: Bundrage’s Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward revealed he has never set foot inside the city of St. Louis.
As fate would have it, the fight was postponed, but King this week added the match to his already-loaded “Gateway to Greatness” card at Scottrade Center on Aug. 7 featuring two undefeated world champions. WBC and IBF 140-pound champion Devon Alexander “The Great” (20-0, 13 KOs) will defend against former WBA junior welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs) and IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs) will face the former holder of that belt, Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KOs).
