LOS ANGELES - As one of the first fighters to put Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on the boxing map, longtime contender and Coachella-valley product Antonio “Toño” Diaz has set a standard of excellence many boxers have tried to reach. On Friday, August 12, in the main event of TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate,” Diaz will fight in the Indio, Calif. venue he helped build, for the first time in nearly 10 years when he takes on Ernesto Zepeda in a ten-round junior middleweight bout.
The bout will be Diaz’ 17th at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and his first since a 2001 technical knockout over Orlando Hollis on October 12. He is unbeaten in the venue at 16-0 and looks to make it 17-0 on August 12.
Diaz vs. Zepeda is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and is sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. Doors open at 6:00pm PT on fight night and the first bell rings at 7:30pm PT. The TeleFutura broadcast begins at 11:30pm ET / PT (10:30pm CT).

NEW JERSEY STATE ATHLETIC CONTROL BOARD SUSPENDS WILLIAMS VS. LARA JUDGES
BOARD IS “UNSATISFIED” WITH THE JUDGING; “REMATCH MAY BE WARRANTED”
LOS ANGELES - The controversy continues to swirl surrounding the Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara fight which took place in Atlantic City last Saturday night. In a move announced Wednesday, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (“NJSACB”) placed all three judges who scored the fight on an indefinite suspension. In its announcement (below), the NJSACB commented that a rematch of the fight “may be warranted” in the wake of the judges awarding Williams a decision victory in a fight which the majority of media members and fans in attendance, as well as those watching the HBO telecast, had Lara winning easily. Two judges scored the fight for Williams, 115-114 and 116-114, while the third scored the fight a draw (114-114).
Having concerns regarding the final scores rendered by the judges, the NJSACB called all three judges to the Board’s offices in Trenton for a full review of each judge’s scoring of each round. Following the review, the Board determined that “there was no evidence of bias, fraud, corruption or incapacity on the part of any of the judges.” However, after hearing the judges’ explanations of their scoring, the Board remained “unsatisfied” with the scoring and suspended all three judges indefinitely. Each judge will be required to undergo additional training before being allowed to judge a professional boxing match again.

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Undefeated prospect Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira will have some heavy hitters supporting him Saturday night – Hall of Famer Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre and former world light heavyweight champion Glen “Road Warrior” Johnson – when he enters the ring against Dominican veteran Jose “Minguito” Soto, headlining the “Sao Paulo Fight Night” pro-am boxing card, presented by MO Productions, at Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The 21-year-old Oliveira (14-0, 11 KOs), now rated No. 18 by the World Boxing Council (“WBC”), takes on Soto (24-7-2, 13 KOs) in the 10-round main event for the vacant WBC Latino middleweight championship.
“Sao Paulo Fight Night” will air live on TV Globo Network, SporTV cable, GloboEsporte and TV Globo International, as well as TYC Sports in Argentina, and streaming for free outside of Brazil and Argentina for free on www.BoxingChannel.tv.
Oliveira, the two-time defending Brazilian International Press Award’s Athlete of the Year (2009 and 2010), was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. He will be fighting for the third time in Brazil as part of a six-fight, two-year deal with TV Global.
