Will Emanuel Steward Ever Set Foot in St. Louis?

Trainers’ History Adds Spice to IBF Junior Middleweight Title Clash:
International Boxing Hall of Famer Emanuel Steward Will Train Cornelius Bundrage, Former World Champion James ‘Buddy’ McGirt Will Train Titleholder Cory Spinks

ST. LOUIS—An interesting fact emerged in June when Don King planned to present IBF 154-pound champion Cory Spinks against mandatory challenger Cornelius “K9” Bundrage in St. Louis: Bundrage’s Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward revealed he has never set foot inside the city of St. Louis.

As fate would have it, the fight was postponed, but King this week added the match to his already-loaded “Gateway to Greatness” card at Scottrade Center on Aug. 7 featuring two undefeated world champions. WBC and IBF 140-pound champion Devon Alexander “The Great” (20-0, 13 KOs) will defend against former WBA junior welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs) and IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs) will face the former holder of that belt, Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KOs).

Don King Looks for a Later Date to Present the IBF 154-Pound Championship Match

ST. LOUIS—The International Boxing Federation junior middleweight championship scheduled for June 12 at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis has been postponed.  Don King Productions was promoting the event that planned to feature St. Louisan Cory Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) defending his IBF 154-pound title against mandatory challenger Cornelius Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs), from Detroit.

A number of conflicting interests factored into the decision to move the bout to a future card.

Don King Productions’ longtime radio partner in St. Louis, Hot 104.1 FM, concurrently announced their popular “Super Jam 3” concert would take place on the same day in the St. Louis suburb of Maryland Heights, and DKP will be announcing shortly that they will be presenting another world championship boxing event in St. Louis later this summer.

Promoter Don King said he preferred to not compete with a radio station that already has a commitment to be somewhere else on June 12.  In addition, with news leaking out about an August boxing event in St. Louis he will be announcing soon, King felt he may be competing with himself for limited entertainment dollars during the summer season.
