QUOTES & PHOTOS FROM TODAY’S WARD-ABRAHAM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PRESS CONFERENCE

LOS ANGELES – Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinalists Andre Ward and Arthur Abraham participated in a press conference on Tuesday at Sisley Italian Kitchen in Sherman Oaks, Calif., to formally announce their May 14 showdown at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., live on SHOWTIME®.

Ward will defend his WBA Super Middleweight title against the European superstar and former world champion to kick off the Semifinals of the groundbreaking tournament.  Abraham, who is in the middle of training for the fight, was not able to attend the press conference from his home base in Berlin, Germany and joined via video conference.

The Ward-Abraham winner advances to the tournament Finals against the winner of the Carl Froch-Glen Johnson Semifinals showdown.  The winner earns instant bragging rights as the world’s No. 1 168-pound fighter.

The talented Ward (23-0, 13 KOs), of Oakland, Calif., has emerged as the tournament favorite after impressive triumphs in Group Stage bouts over Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green, as well as Sakio Bika.

Six Questions with Heavyweight KO Artist Joey Abell, Who Battles Cristobal Arreola on ESPN2 Friday Night at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California.

Los Angeles, CA  – Twenty-Six knockouts in his 27 wins would qualify calling Joey Abell (27-4, 26 KOs) a “Knockout Artist.”  This Friday night, the “Knockout Artist” looks to make a big heavyweight statement when he takes on his toughest and most notable opponent of his career in world-rated contender Cristobal “The Nightmare” Arreola at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.  The scheduled 10-round co-main event will be televised on ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights.”

We go “Inside the Mind” of the hard-hitting southpaw known as “Minnesota Ice” with “Six Questions” concerning this showdown:

QUESTION #1:  Best training camp?

ABELL: “Definitely! It went really well.  With many of my other fights, I really didn’t get enough time in between to have a real heavyweight training camp. This camp no excuses.  I had much longer to prepare this time and got in lots of sparring and really worked on my endurance and got everything I needed to win.”

ABELL LOOKS TO PUT ARREOLA’S WORLD TITLE HOPES ON “ICE” FRIDAY, JANUARY 28 AT PECHANGA

ABELL LOOKS TO PUT ARREOLA’S WORLD TITLE HOPES ON “ICE” FRIDAY, JANUARY 28 AT PECHANGA

Los Angeles, CA  – Not long ago, Cristobal Arreola had won his first 27 pro fights; was ranked as the #1 heavyweight contender in the world; and was arguably the most popular and exciting heavyweight boxer worldwide since Mike Tyson. However, all thoughts of Arreola taking over Tyson’s reign dissipated after a hard-fought world title loss to Vitali Klitschko, when the Riverside, California knockout artist ballooned up to 263 pounds for his next fight and has been criticized for his lack of conditioning and desire ever since.

Now 29-2 (25 KOs) and desperate to regain respect and acceptance as a legitimate contender for a world heavyweight title, “The Nightmare” will take on hard-hitting southpaw Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell (27-4, 26 KOs) in the scheduled 10-round main event of the Goossen Tutor Promotions presentation of an ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” telecast from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California on January 28, 2011 LIVE at 10 PM Eastern/7 PM local.

CRISTOBAL ARREOLA “NO PAIN, NO GAIN”

CRISTOBAL ARREOLA “NO PAIN, NO GAIN”

Riverside, CA -Seldom, if ever, has the saying, “No Pain, No Gain” seemed so mild compared to what Heavyweight warrior Cristobal Arreola endured last Friday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in front of an ESPN “Friday Night Fights” audience in his 12-round unanimous decision victory over Manuel Quezada for the WBC Mexican National Heavyweight Championship.    The good news is that Arreola’s left hand was only fractured in the middle of the 2nd round.  A splint was put in place today by Dr. Theodore Gregorius with a cast to be applied on Thursday once the swelling subsides.
Prognosis:  unable to use his left hand for 4 to 6 weeks.
