LATEST ON MEGA FIGHT: POSITVE DEVELOPMENT?

LATEST ON MEGA FIGHT: POSITVE DEVELOPMENT?

 By Reni M. Valenzuela

Money, for all its powerful hold on people, is a poor master but a good servant.

If money is the issue that remains to be solved in order to make The Fight come true, then it’s easy to deal with it for Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. if only they would look at money being the lesser thing which pales in comparison with their legacy, dignity, character, integrity, people’s esteem, sports standing, true greatness and the world’s appreciation or condemnation.

BOB ARUM IS ATOP HIS THRONE!

BOB ARUM IS ATOP HIS THRONE!

By Reni M. Valenzuela

Bob Arum is atop his throne.  He has been playing god as though he has the world at his command. He is in his twilight years, yet still looks at money as though he can bring it to heaven or hell.  Leaving a great legacy like the great Muhammad Ali is normally what old people are most concerned about, but not Arum.

The Top Rank honcho is a bigwig in fight sport, a top-notch promoter with a burly Buddha stature and with so much kingly stubborn “power” to direct the destiny of the boxing world today.   Bob is different and he may not think so that he conducts himself like he is the king of kings in boxing when he, Michael Konz or the entire Pacquiao camp blurted out, “That’s crazy,”  only to insist that it’s not possible to make the biggest boxing event in history, the Mayweather-Pacquiao in May of this year because, allegedly, it doesn’t make sense “economically.”

MAYWEATHER VS. ORTIZ RECORDS SECOND HIGHEST NON-HEAVYWEIGHT PAY-PER-VIEW GROSS EARNINGS IN BOXING HISTORY

MAYWEATHER VS. ORTIZ RECORDS SECOND HIGHEST NON-HEAVYWEIGHT PAY-PER-VIEW GROSS EARNINGS IN BOXING HISTORY

LAS VEGAS –   Floyd Mayweather puts more meaning to his ring name “Money” every time he fights.  With early pay-per-view numbers counted and confirmed, the pugilist’s recent STARPOWER fight against Victor Ortiz generated buysfrom 1.25 million homes with a value of $78,440,000 dollars in pay-per-view revenue.  These numbers make the event the second highest grossing non-heavyweight pay-per-view event of all time.

With another successful pay-per-view event under his belt, Mayweather continues his reign as the biggest and most lucrative attraction in the sport.  He has now appeared in the three biggest non-heavyweight pay-per-view events in the sport’s history, including Mayweather vs. Oscar de la Hoya ($136,853,700), Mayweather vs. Ortiz ($78,440,000 million) and Mayweather vs. Sugar Shane Mosley ($78,330,000 million).

“My motto is ‘hard work and dedication’ and I have shown this throughout my entire career, which has allowed me to go out and perform each time I step in the ring,” said Mayweather. “I give the fans everything I have with the best competition and exciting fights.  I must be doing something right as they keep buying my fights and I appreciate their tremendous support.  It feels good to be able to generate such a great interest in the sport.”

“Every time Floyd steps into the ring, he reminds us that he is the greatest fighter in the sport today and certainly its biggest star.” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO Mayweather Promotions.  “The financial success of his fight with Victor Ortiz reinforces Floyd’s position in the sport as iconic and he should be appreciated for bringing all of this attention and good fortune to the sport.  His pay-per-view success is staggering and the history books will reflect this impact.”

MAYWEATHER DIDN’T WIN AGAINST ORTIZ

MAYWEATHER DIDN’T WIN AGAINST ORTIZ

By Reni M. Valenzuela

Much of the boxing world is in darkness nowadays. Notably the part where Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is involved as he leaves many people “groping” again. And the recently concluded teeth-gnashing Mayweather-Ortiz comedy-drama is just another ugly attestation to the sad plight of the sport wherein the innocent fight fans have always been at the “receiving end.”

Here’s the score:

Mayweather didn’t win against Victor Orttiz and wasn’t able to grab the
Welterweight belt from the champion who ripped Money Floyd in a flurry of
solid punches in a couple of rounds. Mayweather was simply and foolishly
declared the “legal winner” and was handed the leather symbol to wrap
around his waist. But heaven can’t be fooled, for all is meaningless about
the silly outcome of that fight.
