LOS ANGELES, CA (January 22) – Golden Boy Promotions, one of the world’s leading boxing promotional companies, is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached to promote undefeated Mexican boxing sensation and WBC Youth Welterweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who will seek a world title shot at 147 pounds in 2010.
The multi-fight agreement between Golden Boy and Alvarez was signed today during a press conference in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, the hometown of the promising Aztec boxer, and where he has fought numerous times, transforming himself into the sport’s most promising Mexican fighter.
“I want to show everyone that I will be a World Champion and that I’m ready to fight the best fighters in the world,” said Saul Alvarez. ”The opportunity to work with Golden Boy is definitely one that I could not pass up as I feel it will help me achieve my goal of reaching my full potential as a fighter and becoming a huge success in boxing.”
“This is a very important moment for Golden Boy Promotions,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. ”Saul is an idol throughout Mexico because he has incredible natural boxing talent and a charismatic personality to go along with it. This signing of Saul Alvarez is something that will lead both Saul and Golden Boy to continued success in boxing in the United States, Mexico and around the world.”
“We have been working with Golden Boy Promotions for many years going back to the days when they promoted Oscar “Chololo” Larios and we are very happy that Saul Alvarez’s career will be guided by this influential company,” said Alvarez’s manager Jose Reynoso.
At just 19 years old, Guadalajara’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) has quickly become the most talked about young Mexican boxer today. He compliments his natural boxing ability with devastating power, an extremely hard work ethic and an encyclopedic knowledge of boxing. His fiery style in the ring and trademark red hair have earned him the nickname “Canelo” which translates to Cinnamon in English. Canelo’s most notable victories include an April 2008 TKO win over Gabriel Martinez to retain his WBA Fedecentro Welterweight title, a unanimous decision win over then undefeated Euri “Million” Gonzalez in February of 2009 in which he retained his NABF Welterweight title and captured the WBO Latino Welterweight belt and an August 8, 2009 win to capture the WBC Youth Welterweight crown with a second round knockout over Russian Marat Khuzzev. In his most recent fight on December 5, 2009, he won a unanimous decision over American Lanardo Tyner to retain his NABF Welterweight title.

Welterweight Championship Unification Fight Scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30 at Mandalay Bay Between Shane Mosley and Andre Berto Cancelled
LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (January 18, 2010) – WBC Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto stated in a personal press release earlier today that due to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti and deeply affected his family who resides there, he is physically and emotionally unable to prepare for his Saturday, Jan. 30 bout with WBA Welterweight World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley and, as a result, will withdraw from the bout. RISING UNDFEATED STAR ERISLANDY LARA FACES HIS FIRST “CONTENDER” AGAINST GRADY BREWER ON JANUARY 29
LARA VS. BREWER TO AIR IN CO-FEATURED BOUT ON FOX SPORTS NET
AT THE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS
LOS ANGELES, January 13 – Former Cuban amateur star Erislandy Lara has made his mark in the professional ranks with the same speed and impact that his blistering combinations make on his opponents, and after just nine fights, he appears to be ready to graduate to the next level. On Friday, January 29, the undefeated rising star will be featured in a 10-round junior middleweight bout that will push Lara to the limit as he takes on 154-pound standout and the winner of the second season of “The Contender,” Grady Brewer. Lara vs. Brewer will be the opening bout of the Fox Sports Net telecast headlined by Campillo vs. Shumenov II from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Former amateur star Erislandy Lara (9-0, 5 KO’s) has made a seamless transition to the professional ranks since defecting from Cuba in 2008, and in just nine professional fights has dazzled boxing insiders and fans alike with his speed, power and poise. Fresh off of a near-shutout win over veteran Luciano Perez in his first 10-round fight last December, Lara will up the ante once again when he takes on seasoned contender Grady Brewer in a ten round junior middleweight bout.
“This is a big opportunity for me and I’m happy to be fighting a quality opponent like Grady Brewer,” said Lara. “I know he’s going to come ready to fight, but so am I, and I want to make a statement by giving the fans my best performance yet.”
The story of Lawton, Oklahoma’s Grady Brewer (26-11, 15 KO’s) is the classic tale of a fighter who came up the hard way, but in 2006, Brewer finally got his chance to shine as a competitor on the hit reality series “The Contender.” By the end of that year he scored three victories and defeated former World Champion Steve Forbes to take home the series crown. Since then, Brewer has put together four more wins, three by knockout and is eager to pin the first loss on Lara’s record on January 29.
“There’s no denying Lara’s talent, but he’s not ready for me or this fight,” said Brewer. “I’ve paid my dues the hard way and now it’s time for me to make my move. This ain’t the amateurs and I’m going to let Lara know that on January 29.”
“Fight Night With De La Hoya and Hopkins: Campillo vs. Shumenov II” features the 12-round Light Heavyweight World Championship rematch between Spain’s Gabriel Campillo defending his WBA crown against Las Vegas resident Beibut Shumenov. The evening of boxing will be presented by KZ Event Productions and Golden Boy Promotions, with Campillo vs. Shumenov presented in association with Sampson Boxing LLC. The bout will be televised live on Fox Sports Net (FSN) and its regional sports network affiliates beginning at 11 pm ET / 8 pm PT (check local listings). Doors will open at 6 pm and the first bell rings at 7 pm.
Tickets for this action-packed night of boxing, which will be hosted by and attended by future Hall of Famers Oscar de la Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, are priced at $150, $125, $100, $50 and $40 (general admission standing room tickets).
