LIVING THE “AMERICAN DREAM” – A FOURTH OF JULY REMINDER FROM FORMER THREE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION JUAN DIAZ

LIVING THE “AMERICAN DREAM” – A FOURTH OF JULY REMINDER FROM FORMER THREE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION JUAN DIAZ
July 3, 2010 – I am the son of Mexican immigrants who is a professional boxer with a college diploma. I have earned three world titles in my career and I am training to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for the Unified Lightweight World Championship on July 31. I also own a construction business with my brother and am taking the necessary steps to become a lawyer.
This is because my parents had the foresight to move to the United States so that I could have these opportunities. As we celebrate the Fourth of July, it is important to remember that we live in a country where anything is possible and the “America Dream” is real.
As a young boy, I saw the troubles my immigrant family and friends faced while working to become citizens and acquire the same unalienable rights that Americans often take for granted. There are millions of Mexican immigrants in this country and I know that there are others out there like me who are on the brink of greatness, and could even be the missing link in solving some of this country’s toughest problems.
We have reached a crossroads in the way our country handles immigration. In some ways, it seems as though we are taking a step backward with the passage of Arizona SB 1070 which I feel violates basic rights. Despite my feelings about this specific law, I believe in our system of government. I believe in the people’s right to vote and to choose who represents them. I believe in checks and balances.
After my days in the ring are over, I want to be a successful lawyer who champions rights for the people. I want to contribute to our democracy and pay my good fortune forward to those who are seeking the opportunities that our Founding Fathers had in mind. I want to help people see that the “American Dream” is not a thing of the past, but a thing of the present and I hope that the Fourth of July is a reminder of how lucky we are to live in this country.
Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz
Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz is a 26-year old former Three-Time Lightweight World Champion who is training to fight current Unified Lightweight World Champion Juan Manuel Marquez in “Fight of the Year: The Rematch” on July 31 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas live on HBO Pay-Per-View®. Diaz resides in Houston.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:
Before we talk about the undercard, I just want to make another quick announcement. This Friday, July 2 there is going to be a special edition of Sólo Boxeo Tecate on Telefutura, which is going to go inside Marquez vs. Diaz II. It’s going to be a 90-minute special, a deep look into the first fight and an analysis by some very well-known fighters, such as Israel Vasquez and others are going to be talking about the first fight. Marquez and Diaz are going to be on talking about that first fight and what kind of adjustments they have to make for the second fight and they’re going to be showing never before seen camp footage, how these two guys are preparing. So, in a way, it’s almost like a 24/7 put into one 90-minute show and that’s going to be a special this coming Friday, July 2, which is going to be on Telefutura. So, please make sure you watch out for that. When we announced Marquez and Diaz II, the rematch of the fight of the year of last year at the Media Center at the MGM Grand when we did the Mayweather and Mosley fight, many of you were excited about this fight and fight fans were asking for a rematch. But the promise that I made there in front of all you media members was that we were going to put together an undercard, which is worthy of the fight of the year, basically a card which will include fights where each one of those could be featured on an HBO or on a Showtime as a standalone fight on the Boxing After Dark or a Showtime fight.

MARQUEZ VS. DIAZ IS VOTED 2009′S FIGHT OF THE YEAR
BWAA AWARD TO BE PRESENTED IN NEW YORK ON JUNE 11 LOS ANGELES, February 1 – The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) has spoken, and the verdict is that the February 28, 2009 battle between Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez and Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz is the winner of the 2009 Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier award for Fight of The Year. “This is a great honor and receiving this award is one of the highlights of my career,” said Marquez, who stopped Diaz in the ninth round of their unforgettable war at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. ”I thank Juan Diaz for being a great warrior, because it takes two to make a fight like this. Since my brother Rafael won the award last year, I’m also proud to be keeping it in the family.” “My fight with Juan Manuel Marquez was definitely my toughest fight and I’m proud that the members of the BWAA honored Juan Manuel and I with this award,” said Diaz, a former Three-Time Lightweight World Champion. ”We both left it all in the ring that night and it’s always special when people appreciate your hard work. Congratulations to Juan Manuel on a great fight and on winning this award.” On February 28, 2009, the WBA and WBO Lightweight World Titles were on the line at Houston’s Toyota Center when hometown hero Juan Diaz took on future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez. Early on, Diaz controlled the action, seeming to be too young, fast and aggressive for the veteran from Mexico City, but as the all-action fight went on, Marquez began to settle in and as he found his range, he started to make his charge back. Finally, in the ninth round, Marquez halted the courageous “Baby Bull”, completing his amazing comeback win. “I congratulate both Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz on winning the BWAA’s Fight of The Year award,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, which promoted the bout and promotes both fighters. ”This was a fight that promised to be great on paper and it not only lived up to all the expectations, but surpassed them. When you want to see what boxing at the elite level is all about, with skill, power, heart and determination, you look at a fight like Marquez vs. Diaz.” The award will be presented at the BWAA’s 85th annual banquet in New York City on June 11. |
