“Floyd is a good fighter.  But I’ve never thought he was great.”

- Victor Ortiz

Kelly Swanson

Thank you, everybody, for joining us today.  As everybody knows, Star Power, Mayweather vs. Ortiz is getting closer and closer.  It is set for Saturday, September 17th, and we are delighted today to be joined by Victor Ortiz for this international conference call.

Before I announce the principals, including Oscar De La Hoya, who will do the introductions, I just want to do a little homework here.  To let everybody know tonight Victor Ortiz, along with Oscar De La Hoya, will appear on Piers Morgan.  That is tonight on CNN.  It is at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time; 6:00 p.m. Pacific, and it will re-air again at midnight Eastern time; 9:00 Pacific.

So, we’re looking forward to seeing that interview and also next week we have the Mayweather Workout live from Las Vegas.  It will be the first time, actually, we are going bring you a live workout via satellite for the television stations to take in, and then followed by the next day Mayweather would do his conference call and we also have a workout in Los Angeles with Alfonso Gomez and Josesito Lopez.  And then we get into fight week and we are about to send out an updated fight week schedule so everybody knows what’s happening as we approach this unbelievable fight.

As I mentioned, today we are joined on the call by Victor Ortiz, also Rolando Arellano, Ortiz’s manager; and Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, who will be making the introductions.  So without further ado, I’d like to turn it over to Oscar De La Hoya.  Oscar?

Oscar De La Hoya

Thank you very much and just want to verify that I, personally, am very proud of all my colleagues who have been able to put this fight together, including Richard Schaefer, my matchmaker, Eric Gomez, everyone working as a team has been unbelievable.  So, everybody knows September 17th will be a historic moment for the world of boxing.  Obviously, you do have Floyd Mayweather, Jr., making his comeback from his brief retirement from boxing which will be over a year and a half when he steps inside the ring, against the welterweight and, in my eyes, the best fighter at 147 pounds, the WBC Champion, Victor Ortiz.

DE LA HOYA, DRUGS, INFIDELITY AND SOLUTION

DE LA HOYA, DRUGS, INFIDELITY AND SOLUTION

By Reni M. Valenzuela

Why do people have to be saddened about it?

Oscar De La Hoya checking himself into a rehab for substance abuse which
addiction began with marital infidelity is a step in the right direction. Such is a very positive news and a reason to be joyful about especially for his family andloved ones, including his followers and fans.

It is not as simple as it may seem for any high-profile personality to voluntarily enter a rehab institution and announce it to the public. There must have been some light from above that struck De La Hoya similar to that which spotted upon Saul of Tarsus on his way to Damascus.

De La Hoya confessed: “After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws.”

Golden Boy is right on track!

ARLINGTON, VA. - Olympic Gold Medalist and former Ten-Time World Champion in six weight divisions who turned USO veteran, Oscar de la Hoyatouched down stateside today following a whirlwind seven-day USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour to Kuwait and Iraq.  Accompanied by up-and-coming fighters Adrien Broner, Danny Jacobs and Seth Mitchell, De La Hoya led the group to the Middle East on March 8, where they went on to extend their thanks to troops and visit eight military bases.  Among some of the installations visited were Camp Arifjan, COB Basra, Camp Victory, Camp Liberty, JSS Loyalty and JSS Justice.

Having lifted the spirits of thousands of servicemen and servicewomen, the group held a series of boxing clinics as well as signed hundreds of autographs and delivered an infinite number of smiles.  Most telling of the group’s popularity among troops was seen at Camp Victory, where more than 600 troops turned out to attend a USO boxing demonstration featuring the fighters.  Despite the tour coming to a close, its impact on De La Hoya and the others were felt once they returned home.

Quotes:

Attributed to Oscar de la Hoya:

[On the impact the tour had on his life...]

“Going on this USO tour and spending time with the servicemen and servicewomen who protect our country was a life-changing experience.  You don’t realize what it means to be a participant in our military efforts and the sacrifices each one of them is making to fight for and protect our freedom until you see it first-hand.”

[On what he learned while out on tour...}

"Hearing their stories and seeing what they go through on a daily basis has changed my life.  The opportunity to see how our troops live and understand their ability to be ready for anything at a moment's notice showed me what it means to be truly brave."

[On what he plans to do after his tour...]

“I hope that we were able to make a difference in the lives of the troops we met.  I am dedicated to continuing to help the USO with their mission of uplifting the spirits of our nation’s troops, sharing my experiences and encouraging others to support our brave servicemen and servicewomen in any way they can.”
