Without any further ado I’m going to let Oscar give everyone the rundown on this great card we have coming up September 18th.

Matthysse Camp Turns Down Harris Rematch
Mar 22nd
CARLSTADT, NJ. (March 22, 2010) — All former junior welterweight champion Vivian Harris was hoping for was a rematch with Lucas Matthysse in order to right the wrong that he suffered during their fight in Mexico City.
On February 20th referee Gelasio Perez Huerta unjustifiably stopped the competitive contest midway into the 4th round, in what several media members agree was one of the worst stoppages they have ever seen.
An immediate televised rematch in the United States was supposedly in the works but now seems unlikely. According to Golden Boy Promotions Lucas Matthysse has turned down the fight and the opportunity to set the record straight on his tainted victory.
“He’s a coward plain and simple,” said Harris from his home in Carlstadt, New Jersey. “Why else would he and his team not want to fight me? They saw that his eye was rapidly closing and that there was a lot more fight left. They know it’s a risky fight and they probably just want to go back to fighting nobodies in Argentina. They have padded his record from the start of his career.”
Statement from Vivian Harris
Feb 23rd
Former Jr. welterweight champion Vivian Harris released the following statement regarding the result of Saturday night’s bout with Lucas Matthysse in Mexico City.
“I just wanted to let everyone know that what happened in Mexico City was by far the worst injustice that I have ever experienced. The fight between me and Lucas Matthysse was a close and competitive fight from the start. In the second round, I hit Matthysse with a right hand that caused severe swelling around his right eye. I’ll admit that I lost the third round. In the forth we exchanged punches, I got hit with a right hand, I was not hurt, my legs were fine, I wasn’t’null dizzy.
I went to tie Matthysse up and out of nowhere Referee Gelasio Perez Huerta breaks us apart. He then tries to remove my mouth piece. At this point I still don’t understand what he is doing, and even Matthysse was unaware of what was happening. Huerta then waves his hands signaling the stoppage! I was in disbelief. How in the world do you just stop a fight like that? Every single person watching could clearly see that I was fine. The crowd booed loudly when they realized the fight was being stopped.
This is boxing, fighters hit, and get hit back, and while I fully understand that the referees’ job is to protect the fighters this stoppage was a disgrace. Win, lose or draw I would accept the outcome, but let it happen the right way, allow both fighters a fair shake! Matthysse himself admitted after the fight that he thought the stoppage was premature.
My team is working hard along with my promoter Golden Boy to get the decision overturned to a no contest and more importantly, an immediate rematch.
Again, I want to emphasize this was not a controversial call it was straight up the wrong call. All you need to do is watch the fight and see for yourself.”
“Vicious” Vivian Harris Ready for Matthysse
Feb 19th
It’s been a difficult past two years for Vivian Harris. Boxing politics coupled with long stretches of inactivity have plagued the former junior welterweight champion, but the proud Guyana native remains undeterred.
“I still consider myself one of the best fighters in the division,” said Harris. “I have faced some adversity these last two years but I’m still determined. I’m still hungry. I am here and I will be champion again.”
The 30-year-old Harris landed in Mexico City on Tuesday for his scheduled clash with Lucas Matthysse Saturday night at the Foro Scotiabank. Harris understands how important this fight is for his career. The winner puts himself right in the mix in the ultra talent-rich junior welterweight division.
“I’m ready to go,” said Harris Wednesday evening. “I’m fully prepared for Matthysse. This is my first step back to a world title and I will not be denied.”
The undefeated Argentine puncher Matthysse has compiled an impressive record of 25-0 with 23 KOs. His clash with Harris however, represents a significant step up in class, as thus far, his perfect record has come against mostly soft opposition.
Harris vs. Matthysse will be the co-featured bout with the Ponce De Leon vs. Orlando Cruz main event.
The card will air live in Latin America on the HBO Plus service.
