Two Budding Superstars—One From Boxing, One From Music—Team Up
UNCASVILLE, Conn.—Grammy-nominated recording artist Drake will join undefeated World Boxing Council super lightweight champion Devon Alexander “The Great” during the boxer’s walk to the ring for his world championship unification match on Saturday at Mohegan Sun that will be televised live on HBO (9:30 p.m. ET/PT) from Mohegan Sun. The event is being promoted by Don King Productions.
Drake will perform his smash-hit “Forever,” which will provide a perfect opportunity to play to the song’s lyric, “Last name ever, first name greatest,” as Alexander’s ring nickname is “The Greatest.”
The song was included on the soundtrack of the LeBron James documentary film “More Than a Game” and peaked in Billboard magazine at No. 1 on the Rap chart; No. 2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart; and No. 8 on the overall Hot 100 chart.
The boxer and rapper, both 23, recently met in Las Vegas where Alexander, a native of St. Louis, had set up his training camp. The boxer’s trainer-manager Kevin Cunningham and Drake’s managers noted the chemistry between the two emerging superstars and decided to pair them at Saturday’s boxing event.

Undefeated World Boxing Council 140-Pound Champion Devon Alexander ‘The Great’ Meets International Boxing Federation 140-Pound Champ Juan ‘Iron Twins’ Urango
UNCASVILLE, Conn.—Two world champions from one of the most active and exciting weight divisions in boxing will meet in a unification bout on March 6 when undefeated World Boxing Council super lightweight champion Devon Alexander “The Great” faces International Boxing Federation junior welterweight champion Juan “Iron Twins” Urango at Mohegan Sun Arena. (HBO 9:30 p.m. ET/PT)
Tickets priced at $175, $95, $50 and $35 are on sale now at the Mohegan Sun Box Office and through Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster customers may log on to ticketmaster.com; call Ticketmaster’s national toll free Charge-By-Phone number (800) 745-3000; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.
Alexander (19-0, 12 KOs), from St. Louis, won the vacant WBC 140-pound championship by stopping a former holder of that crown, Junior “The Hitter” Witter, when they met on Aug. 1 in Southern California.
Always a hot prospect, the 23-year-old Alexander successfully emerged from the shadow of fighting his entire career out of the Cory Spinks camp by displaying elusive defensive skills—no doubt picked up from his mentor—while unloading enough firepower to cause a tough Brit to quit on his stool.
Alexander has been building his unblemished record since high school. He served notice that he would be a force to be reckoned with after winning a unanimous decision over former world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Jan. 19, 2008.
Urango (22-2-1, 17 KOs), a 29-year-old Colombian native now fighting out of Cooper City, Fla., is a two-time world champion. He won his first world title in 2006, defeating Ben Rabah to capture the IBF 140-pound crown.
In his next fight, Urango took on one of the toughest challenges of his career against then-undefeated Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, a match he lost by decision.

Urgango regained the subsequently vacated IBF title on Jan 30, 2009, winning a unanimous decision over Herman Ngoudjo in Montreal.
Never one to skip a challenge, Urango ventured up to the 147-pound limit to face undefeated WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto in South Florida on May 30, 2009. He lost by decision.
Urango returned to 140 pounds to successfully defend his IBF junior welterweight title on Aug. 28 in South Florida against former two-time world champion and noted knockout artist Randall Bailey. The tall, long-armed Bailey, known for having one of the best right hands in the sport, sent Urango to the mat in the sixth round. The Colombian showed great fortitude to survive the round, then rallied to floor Bailey three times, leading Bailey’s corner to throw in the towel in the 11th round.
The event is being promoted by Don King Productions.
WBC Featherweight Champion Elio Rojas Will Defend His Title Against Guty Espadas On Saturday in Merida, Mexico
Feb 17th
MERIDA, Mexico—World Boxing Council featherweight champion Elio “The Kid” Rojas will make his first title defense against WBC No. 3-ranked Guty Espadas on Saturday at Paliforum Zamna in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.
Cancun Boxing and Don King Productions are promoting the event, which has been branded “The Kukulcan Battle at Yucatan, Mexico.” The same firms promoted the highly successful 2008 WBC heavyweight championship match between Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter and Oleg Maskaev in Cancun.
Rojas (21-1, 13 KOs), 27, a native of the Dominican Republic now fighting out of Brooklyn, N.Y., arrived in Merida late last week to make final preparations for Saturday’s match.
“Merida and all of Yucatan are very beautiful and I’m happy to be here,” Rojas said. “I have been greeted warmly by the Mexican people, and I want to win them over in the ring. It is always an honor to fight in front of fans that love boxing and are part of all the great history here.”
Espadas (45-7, 28 KOs) is a native of Merida who has tangled in the past with big names like Erik Morales and Rocky Juarez. A win here in front of his hometown fans would be the highlight of his career.
Meeting fighters on their home turf is nothing new for the rapidly emerging Rojas. He won the WBC crown at the 126-pound limit in Tokyo, Japan, winning a convincing unanimous decision over then-champion Takahiro Aoh on July 14, 2009.
Don King & Sauerland Event Favor ‘60-40’ Split

King and Sauerland Event Make Counter Offer on Behalf of Nikolai Valuev
To Face WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—Don King Productions and Sauerland Event have countered K2 Promotions latest offer to former two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolai “Giant Russian” Valuev (50-2, 34 KOs) to face World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KOs) with a deal calling for a 60-40 percentage split.
“They approached us with a $1 million offer for Valuev to face Vitali, and Sauerland Event and I told them we would like $4 million for the fight,” King said. “Now they’ve come back to us with a $2 million guarantee. We countered with a 60-40 split of revenue.
“K2 is making the money more important than the attraction. They are promoting the money while I promote the attraction. The attraction recoups your investment and leads to profit. People-wise and money-wise, this is the way you have to think—and people-wise is the most important.”
King said he and Sauerland Event, on behalf of Valuev, are convinced that K2 Promotions, on behalf of Vitali Klitschko, are focusing on obtaining Valuev for the lowest amount of money when they should be focusing on auctioning the ability to host the event and television rights to the highest bidders.
“If K2 Promotions auctions off the rights to become the host site for this extravaganza as well as television rights to Germany, Russia and Ukraine, we believe that alone will bring in over $10 million,” King said. We are so confident in this that we are willing to risk guaranteed money in favor of 40 percent of the revenue stream, which we believe will bring team Valuev $4 million or more.”
