Canelo started out as your typical Mexican turned boxer story. Hailing from the small farming community of Juanacatlán, Alvarez gave up his education at an early age to focus on his boxing career.  Born with red hair, Canelo was picked on at an early age and he turned his childhood  frustration into a boxing career. At the age of 13 he was given his nickname of El Canelo, Spanish for Cinnamon, by his trainer Jose “Chepo” Reynoso.

Canelo quickly became a local sensation because of his punching power and soon enough he was  a national superstar. Canelo attracted the attention of boxing’s biggest superstar in Oscar De La Hoya and was signed by Golden Boy Promotions. Canelo made his American debut vs. Jose Miguel Cotto in 2010 on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley. Canelo won that fight by an impressive 9th round TKO.

Since signing with Golden Boy, Canelo’s superstardom has steadily risen. Tonight Canelo fought on HBO’s Boxing After Dark series in front of a live crowd of over 10,000 fans.  The live attendance is sure to be a record for a Boxing After Dark production. Canelo did not disappoint the fans in Los Angeles as he put on a dominating performance on route to a unanimous decision victory over the cagey Matthew Hatton. Plans are for Alvarez to move up slowly but you can not blame De La Hoya for protecting his golden Canelo. The future is bright for the young superstar.
